The hydraulic system is the muscle behind every lift truck. It’s what turns a small pump motor into the force needed to raise several tons of steel, pallets, or raw material several feet into the air. When something goes wrong here, the forklift doesn’t just slow down — it can stop working entirely, and in the worst cases, become a genuine safety hazard on your warehouse floor.

The control valve directs hydraulic fluid to the correct cylinder — lift, tilt, or auxiliary functions — based on operator input. A faulty or sticking valve can cause the forklift to lift unevenly, drift down under load, or respond to lever movements inconsistently.
Why it happens: Contamination causing valve spools to stick, worn seals inside the valve body, or simple mechanical wear from years of operation.
The fix: Valve issues need diagnostic testing under load — this isn’t a guess-and-replace part of the system. Misdiagnosing a valve issue as a pump issue (or vice versa) is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in DIY forklift troubleshooting.

Visible fluid pooling under the mast, or a forklift that slowly sinks down after lifting a load and stopping, points to worn seals in the lift cylinder. Over time, seals harden, crack, or wear from repeated friction, allowing fluid to bypass rather than build pressure.
Why it happens: Age, heat cycling, contaminated fluid accelerating wear, or physical damage to the cylinder rod from impacts.
The fix: Seal kit replacement is straightforward for a trained technician but requires the cylinder to be properly disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt — rushing this job is exactly how new leaks appear within weeks of a “repair.”
The hydraulic filter protects the pump and valves from debris circulating in the fluid. When it clogs, flow restricts, pressure drops, and the whole system has to work harder — accelerating wear on every other component in this list.
Why it happens: Filters that aren’t replaced on schedule, especially in dusty industrial environments, or fluid that was already contaminated before the filter could catch it.
The fix: Filter replacement is quick and inexpensive — and skipping it is one of the costliest false economies in forklift maintenance, since a clogged filter accelerates damage to the pump and valve, which are far more expensive to repair.
